Re: (TFT) TFT: Magic Item Creation

Michael,
Ahhh yes. An opportunity to quote one of the best magic systems ever made. O.K. The question was . . .

 >> Mike, what problems do you have with the magic item
 >> creation system in Advanced Wizard?

From: Michael Taylor <MichaelTaylor1@compuserve.com>

Here are some of the questions I find painful:
How much is a +1 DX sword worth?

    $1,000 list minus 420 cost* = $580 value - cost of sword
    *cost per week
        1 wizard $120
        2 apprentices $ 50
        igrediants $ 40

How much is ANY magic item worth!

The same +1 DX sword, if it was an attribute enchantment and not a weapon/armor enchantment is worth . . .
    $2,000 list minus 1,650 cost* = $350 value - cost of sword
    *cost per week
        1 wizard $300
        2 apprentices $ 50
        ingrediants $ 0
        Lab restock $ 50
        Lab rental $150
    The ability to hurt Wights
No ability what-so-ever to hurt an air elemental
No ability to stop Vampire regeneration (only silver does that)
    1/2 damage to fire elemental
1/2 damage to water elemental (unless ice)

How many wizards do you need to create an item? Do they sleep,
rest, eat, etc...
How many apprentices? Do they sleep, rest, eat, etc...

Take the strength required each day and subtract 25 for the wizard himself. Divide the rest by 25 to determine how many apprentices will be needed. Here it is as a formula.
    Apprentices needed = (ST/day ? 25)/25
They do sleep, rest, and eat. The guild requires someone to pay $50 to hire an apprentice for a week, but they only get paid $25. In addition guild rates require $1 per point of fatigue (ITL page 29). An ?apprentice may not be called on for more than 25/ST a day. So for the average person to hire an apprentice and use all 25 of his daily fatigue would cost $75 With a mere 8ST wizard who uses 1 fatigue and then rests 15min, would produce 25/ST in 6.25 hours. That leave plenty of time for an hour lunch to break up all those naps, and they would still have 7ST at the end of the day.

How much fST can you create in a day? Is that in eight hours?
16 hours?

A character on an adventure my produce much more than 25 a day. This varies wildly. If they have drain-strength, use batteries, are aided by apprentices, etcetera. This next sentence is a house rule. As a general rule (and specifically to limit strength batteries) I do not let a Wizard expend more Fatigue in one turn than they have ST-1. They may cast themselves unconcious, but they may not cast 50ST lightning because they have a fat battery. They would have to have 50ST.

Can you rush it?

No. ?However, it is NOT permitted to use more wizards than a spell calls for to try to cut down the time.? (AW page 30)

Things like that. The whole potion and magic item value tables seem
horribly messy to me and arbitrary to me. I'd like to be able to compare
the amount of work that went into the creation of any two magic items, but
it seems like this varies according to the rolls
each time a magic item is made.

Yes. The only thing that helps the weekly rolls is a charm. This itself is another magic item. The lead wizard has to have a high DX.
