e.g. not so expensive to build if you use giants building
the walls and dwarves building the dungeons; magic maybe
rare, so most marauders are still faced with a ruddy great
wall and battlements; maybe a dragon would help carrying
blocks on top of the battlements in trade for learning a
spell or two (or a couple of dozen head of cattle) from a
local wizard. etc.

Cas,
I agree. In a world of magic, construction costs could come way down. So should time. A team of wizards with teleport may be able to assemble an entire castle in one day if the parts are already on site. Also a Gate at the quarry would have made Pyramid construction much much easier. In my campaign the Dwarves do the tunneling, but the contract out for surface construction and docks. Their favorite are Giants, and Hymenopteran wranglers. There is also a machine the Dwarves have made and enchanted that tunnels too fast to be safe. Earth elementals are the bomb when it comes to stone construction. They favor magical picks that accelerate the mining rates. Also, like Cas mentioned above, most of my Elves live in huge Banyan trees. They have a whole slew of spells to speed the growth of, repair, and shape the trees. They live so long normaly, and their trees are so important to them, that typicaly if an Elf group buys a youth potion it is for their most ancient central tree home. There is a crew of wizards who specialize in "open tunnel" mining. For when it absolutely positively has to be done by tomorrow. They have a version of the "open tunnel" spell that can be shaped. This makes the carving of statues, details, and releifs almost as efficient as using a cookie-cutter.
