Different tastes it is then.  I kinda like those early struggles to survive and make ends meet.  It builds character.

Don't get me wrong, lots of epic heroism in the 40-50 point range in my games too, and lots of fun.  I just find the struggle to get there makes the successes even sweeter.  But you have to expect the game to last a few years to get that epic stuff in my games, while in yours you can jump right in.  As you said, different tastes.

PS. I have looked a little at your private edition rules, they are very well done, you must have put a lot of work into that document.  I am going to look at the HTH combat section next, because I really do not like the AM HTH rules at all, so HTH rarely happens in my games.  I am hopeful that you improved it.
