Other thoughts about numbers of wizards in an army:

* If it's not a standing army, but an army raised to fight one pitched
battle, it might be easier to enlist more mages than you could normally
recruit to be permanent soldiers.

* If you pay them well, you could hire more mages than you otherwise
might, for a specific battle.

* If you have a contract that involves the wizards helping you out but not
obligated to die for you (casting support spells but not being expected to
go into harm's way), you'd probably have even more luck getting mages.

* When choosing a proportion of troops and looking at the 1:300 ratio,
consider too that only some fraction of the population would ever be a
soldier in an army, too - that factor raises the estimate of number of
wizards per number of soldiers in a society.

* Your average wizard DX is 13 - why? Is the average DX of humans 13
(rather than 10) in your campaign, or do wizards get some bonus because
you figure they get more experience, or...?
