Re: (TFT) On the subject of parrying, crazy and crazier ideas...

I think the problem is the way Melee separates out movement and attack into rounds. The feature that makes online games more realistic is the cycle time for weapon reuse. In a board game with hexes, it would be nearly impossible to manage, but in a real time game the clock is running and the moment you "can" use your weapon again, it swings, or you choose to swing it. The beauty of this is that a smaller weapon hits more often and makes people think about damage over time vs big slow hit damage with relation to their hit/miss ratio.

But, back in Melee, it is always a good idea to do more damage. You get the apportioned number of hits every round, and most of the time at the same DX adjustment. Even with a bow at DX 16, you'd want to have the biggest bow you can use to maximize on damage for both shots. Using a smaller bow won't get you the opportunity to take more shots.

Besides, I'm not advocating a change to the system to make parring or blocking more effective, I just think those features are somewhat lacking in the system.

We just have to remember when we return to Cidri, going toe to toe means: hit first and hit hard enough to knock 'em down, forcing them to waste a round standing and readying their weapon again. Long live the formula!

Good Fortune,
Richard

But if we fix it, do we get the GURPS problem? What's the SIMPLE fix here?

Wait, here's an even crazier idea: DELAY DAMAGE EFFECTS FOR ONE TURN. "OK,
you've impaled the orc on your pikeaxe for an adjusted 38 points of damage,
which takes effect next turn. But for THIS turn, his dying blow is at full DX
and strength..."
