(TFT) Introduction and an Errant School of Thought

the past few weeks i have been toying with the idea of converting Arduin
Grimoire thingies (lots of them) into TFT ... except that i have been
considering the repercussions of converting stuff ... like ... if i convert
Arduin or for that matter, AD&D stuff into TFT ... i might as well play
Arduin or AD&D rather than TFT, its a rather tricky and thorny issue ... so
i
would like to ask your views and opinions on this ...

Glad your interest is renewed! TFT is like that. It's simplicity and
elegance free your imagination in ways that other RPG's rarely do.
As far as opinions, I couldn't disagree with you more!
I'm personally a BIG fan of converting other game systems to TFT. In fact,
I'd love to have a part of Ty's web-site devoted to just such conversion
systems...
First, I've found that TFT's 'common sense' approach to quantitifying the
numbers make it very easy to convert most game systems (there are a few
types of rules that don't translate very well, but AD&D and Arduin would be
pretty easy). So the actual 'work' involved is fairly simple.
Second, as far as "might as well play Arduin or AD&D", I have to smile when
I remember the times I've thrown AD&D monsters against players. They don't
'play' anything NEAR the same way! Try throwing an Umber Hulk at a TFT
party and see if it turns out the same way!
Kobolds that would be laughable in AD&D are deadly in TFT. Monsters with
special abilities have quite different effects on character's in TFT than
they do in other games. A dangerous monster is much MORE dangerous to a TFT
character, so the play's much more exciting.
It's also very comfortable seeing 'familiar' monsters in new settings. In
fact, one of my campaign's was based on the D&D Mystara setting... a
terrific world that has alot of possiblities for TFT players.
Anyway, my opinion is go for it! You'll be glad you did!
Michael
