Re: (TFT) Reality testing

I must say there are elements of DMGIIs story that ring true. Alot of it
boils down to who you find that plays roleplaiyng games. There are quite
alot of people that I met over the years that weren't interested in
roleplaying or interacting with anyone else, just killing and being
powerful/important/number crunching (these people also came across as
somewhat challenged in their interactions with humans in the real world.)
unfortunately these people are very common and, depending on gaming system
(eg> higher in AD&D and lower in CoC and TFT possibly), can outnumber
worthwhile roleplayers significantly.
My only foray recently into roleplaying was a couple with a young kid who
had met my wife, so we all sat down one night to a begining game of AD&D
with me as DM, and the guy's first question is, "Why can't I be fifth
level?? I don't wanna fight kobolds!" (repeatedly and seriously) and he grew
significantly less enthusiastic after this.
All large organizations attract bureaucrats who are interpersonally
challenged and number crunching and ictching to be powerful. Every
McDonalds/hospital/school/university I've worked/studied in has generous
numbers of these people and I would estimate an 80% chance of a buffoon
being in charge once a membership reaches 10 or more (even SCA). This, to
me, is actually a very good reason to listen to DMGIIs idea about everyone
getting all rulebooks etc. for the game, all rules on peolpes core/extension
pages, then we all gotta ready-made reference library at the touch of a
button. The rulebooks etc. come floating along once in a while and theres a
mnoren librarium - hell, we can all get there in the end....
