I always figured a staff had to be of an approximate size and shape of a
thin, long 1 handed object, and this shape was what a wizard needed to
facilitate spellcasting with one hand. Thus it could be an ornately carven
or sticklike, but had roughly a consatnt shape (i.e. no doors, doorstops,
manhole covers etc.)

This reminds me of a joke................
