As line troops? No. As artillery? No, TFT doesn't support that. As
commandos? Rarely.

As technologists? Not individually. What one mage can produce doesn't
sway an encounter of armies. But a guild can produce enough Explosive
Gems (via the spell) and other simple (read: rapid) enchantments to
allow them to be used in mass. Compare the power of a single man to the
power of a platoon. One mage's contribution pales beside even a couple
of squads of troops, but a guild supplying gimicks increases that power
exponentially. And BTW, nobody enchants arrowheads for use in war. The
effort is better used for other things.

The only mages present at battles would be those with a true personal
interest. Otherwise the long hours of waiting that mark warfare are a
hideous waste of the mage's (expensive) time.

All IMHO, of course.
