(TFT) character trees
Michael,
AD&D Dark Sun had the idea of character trees, whereby each player had 2-3
characters he could develop, but only have one at a time on any given
adventure. Thus, if one died, a player would have another of moderately
lower level to take up the slack so to speak.
I found that in TFT it was vastly easier to mix parties of characters of
differing power and not much of a problem to have a 32 point novice with
more powerful ones (Mainly I think because of the lack of area of effect
spells) and so don't really feel it is as big a problem as AD&D
