Steve Jackson was a wargame designer who designed a Man-to-Man combat
boardgame called "Melee" shortly after Ogre, both for Metagaming, which was
owned by Howard Thompson. It was very successful so he designed a
Wizard-to-Wizard wargame called "Wizard". Naming games has never been been
his strong suit.
They were both so succesful that he was asked to put the combat rules and
magic rules together to create a new RPG called "In the Labyrinth". A
labyrinth is a dungeon if you dont know. Again, naming games has never been
been his strong suit.
This was his first roleplaying game. It was also a huge success BUT, it
took 3 years for him to write. The owner of Metagaming decided (probably
because he'd gone broke waiting for this huge success to be finished) not
to release the game in a boxed set with dice and all but as three newsprint
booklets. It was still a success but probably because as far as Steve was
concerned Howard published the rules in a cheapo format and as far as
Howard was concerned because Steve took so long to write this game that it
cost him a fortune they had a very ugly divorce.
As I understand it Steve Jackson was allowed to keep Ogre and Car Wars and
Howard got to keep the rules to TFT.
The upshot is that Steve Jackson wrote another roleplaying game that was
alot like TFT, but not so much like it that he would get sued for
'stealing' the game he wrote that Howard Thompson owns.
If your familiar with GURPS it's very similar. It uses only 3 stats (ST,
DX, IQ) and only uses 6-sided dice. There are many subtle differences. The
skill system uses a "Difficulty Number" system instead of lots of modifers
to a 3d6 roll. The combat system is very similar. The magic system is very
different - having its boardgame roots. It's a much simpler game - and I
personally think its a much more fun game to play.

You are absolutely right. But that's because the rules are broken....
