Re: (TFT) Weapon Multiplier --> Repost

From: "John Paul Bakshoian" <hailmelee@hotmail.com>

One example of why it wouldn't be HTH is boxing. In the ring,
a boxer is in his own hex. He reaches out and attacks with
an extended arm. The hex may seem to shrink when they get up
close and go "head to head", but they still seem to be in
their own hex. If they go "Hand to Hand" then they are
hugging each other and the Referee will break them up.

John,
Exactly. Boxing has rules. Civilize rules. Most combat is not so polite. I'm sure a boxer would want others not to grapple them but if they are close enough to punch, the other person is close enough to grab.

Is this a good analogy of what is not TFT Hand-toHand combat?
Or is TFT Hand-to-Hand combat refering to any fighting in the
same 3 foot diameter? Is this why you concluded that you can't
hit a character in an adjacent hex with your hands, because it
would be under 3 feet?

Close. This enters the realm of theory so it may not be relevant or germain. I find the TFT combat system can work great as a squad level system. You can "flank" a unit, you can "fix" the enemy positon by engaging it, missile weapons get to shoot before they get engaged, etcetera. On the squad level if two units go into HTH they break formation and intermingle. At that point I go to individual Melee. The scale of the conflict has been broken and becomes smaller. In the same sence I have always viewed individuals who engage in HTH to be breaking the scale into an even smaller one. They become entangled in a wresting match. Consider this rule. Any missile weapon fired into HTH will strike either figure at 50/50. The same is true of a squad of archers shooting at two squads of combatants that have intermingled. Remember the scene from Braveheart. "But sire we'll hit our own men." "Yes. But we'll hit theirs as well."
