(TFT) RE: New Item: Maintain Summoning --> Elemental costs: president???

Hello all,
I would feel uneasy about using the Elemental
rules to apply to creations. Elementals differ from
summon spells in too many ways.

When I reorganized the TFT spell list for my
campaign I recognized this by splitting creation
spells into ordinary creations, and 'Invocation
spells'. (Elementals & demons & some other critters
of my own invention are invoked. Invoked critters
are 'realer' than the summoned creatures. In
particular, they exist independent of the caster).

	***

One measure I use when deciding if I want to
add a new magic item is ask, "how will this improve
role-playing?" I'm sure that we could add enough
limitations and rules to this item to make it
'balanced', but this is the sort of item that my
PC "wizard technologists" would love, (so expect
unpleasant ramifications as they combine the item
with other spells / potions / effects / situations).

One obvious use for the item is a myrmidon
wearing a chain of maintain summoned creatures
walking in front of the party and setting off the
traps. ("Magic technology is superior to mere
courage any day...", sneers the PC.) Of course
the trap setter could counter this by making the
trap go off on the second person, so the PC's start
getting two items... I just don't see how this
makes the game more interesting.

For an example of how an item or spell could
improve roleplaying, reread the rules on tears and
simulacra from "Jack of Shadows", by Roger Zelazny.
Now THAT is a item that should be in TFT. (Add to
your own campaigns but remember copyright if you
want to publish...)

	***

The nice thing about Summoned Creatures
was that there was no easy way to get rid of them,
but that they were EXPENSIVE. This item keeps all
of the advantages of the class of spell and short
circuits the one cost.

Everyone and anyone is welcome to add this
to their campaigns if they so wish, but I wonder
if this is an item that TFT wants.

	Rick

Thorn,
Well done. I would add your restrictions into the description of the
spell and then allow it. I particularly like the use of Elemental spells as
a guide for 'forever' creatures. Also the image of a Wizard popping off a
few points of fatigue to find out what the creatures guarding his dungeon
have seen lately is very nice.
