Suggest: "... new colors."  or "...blend their colors."<stop>,
since "...new ones." might be read as new _staves_.

I changed the sentence to read "Staves of equal stored energy will blend their colors, possibly creating new tones of light."

    Doh!  Should say, "can't take any action on the first turn it appears."
