another way ST could be put into such devices is to capture a wizard and
then transfer his ST into an ST battery.  As this is being done
involuntarily,
there might be some extra problems and you might have to create a new
spell, 'Drain ST' or some such -- but that would put a new light on ST
batteries as well.
