I haven't used them, but I don't see why they wouldn't work out as straightforward opponents.  Beyond that, I don't know.  Since they develop specialized versions of themselves for new tasks, there might be any number of versions, perhaps one designed to communicate and make deals with humans.  This could lead to more complicated interactions than "they took your land!".

I would steer clear of magic-using hymenopterans, though.   Without a 'blind spot' like that, it seems to me that something which combines intelligence and insectile, hive-mind efficiency would quickly displace all the other races.  It's just too efficient.
