Actually, thinking of a dwarven town underground - unlike a human city where
the ruined or old bits are underneath it may be the other way.
The dwarves (needing fresh water like most other organisms) are originally
quite happy to be close to water so their colony may be near an underground
river, but eventually the a new sinkhole is worn thorugh upstream so the
whole river drops a few levels underground, and thus the dwarves move their
residential quarter deeper....
Or.....new sinkhole drops a hug amount of water on top of colony, submerging
much of it and killing many. Later, survivors petition adventurers to go and
get old treasury in submerged colony as none of them who go in come out.
What is in there? Maybe alot of undead, or some upperwoeld predator who is
happy munching on dwarf corpses - snapping turtle, croc,
piranha................
