Maybe some openings below the water level as well, to pipe some water flow to other areas. If the opening in the riiver was at a higher elevation, and larger than the opening through which the water eventually exits, it could exit with some real pressure, either for industrial, mining, or sewage treatment purposes.
And I am loving these industrious Dwarves, melting glaciers, piercing mountains, and mining molybdenum. All in a mountain fortress always surrounded by a halo of smoke and fog. Who wouldn't want to adventure there.
And the prospect of clearing out and restarting an ancient one, now that would keep a strong party of dwarves busy at least a year, just to gain the most tenuous foothold.
I want to be a player in that one!
