Curious, historically very few shields were spiked. Even those used as
weapons (I'm thinking the Viking/Saxon shields, here, with their prominent
iron umbos) often lacked them. I wonder why? Only thing I can think of is a
fear of getting your shield stuck in your victim.

Imagine the opponent hitting the shield spike with his weapon....  a lot of
downward stress on your arm/wrist that otherwise might have been a "glancing
blow".
