Wait,  in order to force retreat you have to be the one who inflicts melee damage, which I thought would preclude disengaging, as you only get one action per turn.

I suppose you could rule that the forcing retreat overrides the engagement rules, but I don't see it that way.  One of the benefits of a fighting line in melle is that if you are forced back, your attacker has a hard time following you as he has to fight through your comrades. 

Now I suppose, under just the right circumstances, first thing next round, you could shift into the newly emptied hex, and if you stay ajacent to the third figure, but happened to leave his front hexes, you might technically cease to be engaged - though you would not have used the disengage option. (I've not tried this on a map, but it seems it should theoretically be possible).
