(TFT) Bad and Stupid 5
Bad and Stupid 1
The following encounter should be played out to a conclusion where the
players feel bad. Then the GM should act like he "forgot" something and
rewind. It's a bit of a dirty trick, but if done correctly the players will
be grinning from ear to ear at the end of it.
Grand Master of Thieves
This guy is a wizard who has made a career of stealing from better
wizards. He will spend every day for weeks searching out his victim with a
crystal ball. Sometimes he takes months doing this. Once he is sure about
the item he wants to steal, and the routine of the person he is stealing it
from, he will fly out there on his magic carpet. Arriving at the safest
time possible, when the victim is asleep, he goes insubstantial, and fly in
close. He throws a telekinesis spell to bring the item to himself. For one
turn he becomes solid and grasps the item. Escape is usually very easy. He
can either stay sold and fly away at great speed, or he can go insubstantial
and sink away down through the floor. Or in this case, down through the
deck of the ship.
crystal ball (value $50,000)
2-hex self powered insubstantial magic carpet (value: $8,220,000)
he has has spent the last eight years searching out all forms of
possible competition. These being items of insubstantially. Well it just
so happens that Ada's earrings are enchanted with insubtantiality.
Simpering Foe (human/male/wizard)
St: 16( ) bare hand: 1
Dx: 16( ) iron flesh ring: (6)
Iq: 16( ) Wizardly Thief: $150 5/14
light, trip, speed movement, trailtwister, lock/knock, reverse
missiles, silent movement, reveal/conceal, curse, telekinesis, teleport,
unnoticeability, pentagram, megahex sleep, trance, long-distance telepathy
Studied: spellsniffer, geas, literacy
Simp, will fly out around four thirty one morning to the Triangle to
get Ada's earrings. Gail and Ada get a save vs. Iq to wake up and notice.
12D vs. Iq. Automatic success is a 32. If by some miracle either of them
make the save, they get 90 exp and can action immediately. Odds are he will
escape, and Ada will not notice the earrings are missing until she gets
dressed in the morning.
Uncle will be counting on the fact that the thief forgot one thing. A
crystal ball is not the only way to find something. Astral projection can
be used to find someone, or something, too. If the person knows that thing
well. By going astral, and thinking of her earrings, Ada can easily locate
the earrings and maybe find out who the thief is.
Unfortunately Simpering Foe will have put the earing inside a
pentagram. He has a permanent pentagram in his tower for just this reason.
Also in the pentagram are 3-18 other items of insubstantiality. When the
astral search turns up nothing Uncle will say that this means they are
hidden inside a pentagram.
---Time for the Rewind---
Let the players feel defeated for just a moment. At this point the GM
should say "Oh, I forgot" and rewind to the morning the earrings were
stolen. Ada's astral dragon has been sitting guard over Rebbecca and the
kids. Uncle's astral dragon has been patrolling the seas to keep the pirate
fleet safe. But Gail's astral dragon tends to stay on the ship, searching
out the secrets of the crew.
Her dragon gets a 5D save vs. Iq to notice the foggy figure drifting
through the walls of the ship. If successful she gets 20 exp, and can wake
up the others. While insubstantial, Simpering Foe can only be attacked by
thrown spells.
Apparently Simpering Foe didn't watch Ada long enough to find out that
she and her friends have astral dragons. If he had, he wouldn't have tried
to rob them at all. Oops.
