The Cohorts of The Horse

    It's the Cohorts of The Horse!  Everyone always uses their full name. 
 Villagers start gathering in the town square.  Flowers are put out.  
Everyone waves ribbons or colored kerchiefs.  It's a celebration.
    A cavalry unit of forty men with lance.  They are renowned for their 
exploits.  Owing allegiance to no king, they ride from village to village 
righting wrongs and protecting the weak.  The villagers love them.
    Fatted calves are roasted, ale is brought out by the keg, and fresh 
bread is cooked by the basket full.  It's a real festival any time The 
Cohorts of The Horse arrive.  Then the eat, drink, and dance late into the 
night.  Telling stories of dragons and ogres.  Of the werewolf they tracked 
for six months in the mountains.  The nest of wyverns they finally had to 
smoke out.  And the time they were surrounded by shadow wights on a moonless 
night.

    After a couple of days they ride on.  One time a character in my 
campaign actually joined them.  This is what he discovered.
    The Cohorts of The Horse have a circuit of twenty six villages they 
visit.  They never actually do anything.  They just ride from village to 
village, bragging about what they did.  The one time they actually 
encountered a giant brigand, they broke ranks and rode away in fear.  It 
took a whole week to round up all their members again.
    Basically they exist on the charity and blind idol worship of the 
villagers.
