I'd choose 1/4 of adjDX, or maybe 1/4 of actual DX. Maybe also -1 if you 
don't have a hand weapon, and +1 to max defense for every size class of 
shield (i.e. buckler or off-hand weapon allows +1 defense, tower shield 
allows +4 defense).
