That is how my walls work too, ever since you described your "crowded hex" rules in an earlier post. I started using it right away, and my group thinks it works great.
For hex combat I copy 1" hex paper, and tape together as many as I need. Drawing each new map anew, and accumulating a small pile of maps that I could theoretically reuse. large running battles are on a big blank hexmap reserved for this purpose.
