Unintended effects of supernatural power is a major literary theme
used from Greek legends through anti-witch tales, folk tales,
Shakespeare, early gothic literature, and beyond. Usually more in
the form of prophesies and promises being mis-interpreted, potions
quaffed by the wrong person, spell activation rules finding
unintended circumstances, hubristic backlash, tricky magical beings,
and the like. A general theme of several such stories includes
something perhaps parallel to munchkin players getting their just
deserts.
