(TFT) Rune Magic

Has anyone come up with a system in which spells are "inscribed" onto items 
to be triggered under specific conditions? A method of paying ST for a 
one-shot self powered spell, or a recurring use one? I've been worrking on a 
"traditional" rune system for my Dwarf and Northmen players (read Vikings). 
Just interested in any ideas anyone might have.
