Re: (TFT) Illusions vs. summoning --> Comments on balance.

Hi all,

I'm new to this list, but I've been running a TFT campaign pretty continously since the early 80's. If anyone were to research a Summon Octopus spell (no one has, but most of my players over the years have been more hero than mage) I would probably go with 4 ST to cast and 2ST per ct (to reflect the difficulty of giving it a comfortably humid environment). If anyone were to research and disseminate such a spell, it would make the illusion far more dangerous, since I do not permit an illusion of anything the mage has not actually seen, and Octopi are limited to certain Oriental themed areas in my game. I do not consider an illusion of an Octopus to be a balance problem - I generally use a 50% rule for animals and the "accidental" 2 die save, since I consider their senses different enough to make a convincing illusion difficult. And against intelligent opponents - all it takes is one wise guy in the bunch.

Best,

Eric

Hi all,
Erol and I have both (for various reasons) made it
so the Illusion of an Octopus can't be made. But in
cannon TFT it CAN be made.

As Dave Seagraves said, making Illusions of Octopi
give the most bang for your 2 fST buck.

I consider an Illusion Octopi armed with 3 bastard
swords (or even 2 and a shield) to be way too tough
for 2 fST. So I think you would WANT to keep no
summoning spell for an Octopi. Basically under the
current TFT rules, an Octopi that is created must be
either a Image or an Illusion which greatly increases
the chance of it being disbelieved.

(It has taken damage so it can't be an Image. I
disbelieved it once but it is still here, however I know
it is an Illusion so I must have messed up my IQ 13 roll.
I'll try again...)

I sent in what I felt was a fair Summoning Spell
for an Octopi (I also thought Erol's was good as well
using his limitations for the Octopi). However I question
if you WANT to add such a spell to cannon TFT. I think
it will encourage abuse of this Illusion.

        Comments from others?

But it would seem that if an octopus suddenly appeared, then the opposing side would automatically know that it was an image or an illusion. Depending on the situation, that seems like a huge disadvantage.
