Lack of detail comes from it being well before "recorded history". Something 
connected to a lack of good aerial photographs, I suspect.

Depending on the level of detail you are after (and for how large an area), 
the Gamma World answer suffices: start with a modern topographic map (a couple 
of the 1:100,000 map sheets should give you lots of room to play in) and 
fiddle with the sea level, extent of lakes, and similar.
