Re: (TFT) Mark Tapley hits one into orbit

Your point (quoted below) is certainly logical, if one takes the spells as mature and distinct packaged scraps of knowledge, learned as rote and ritual by mages who do not really understand them. If the Mnoren or the Gods or the Whoever were to leave us a legacy of such arts, it's reasonable that Their spell intended for travel would serve unwell in other functions, much as a passenger car makes a poor race car or truck. If the campaign as a whole or the GM as an individual has thusly upholstered the spells, that's certainly a reasonable approach.

But I was building a world where whole cities were vanished, where a more unevolved view of the magic system served me better. In that view, treating the spells as dune buggies let me get my postulated pre-MageWar cultures into more trouble.

You see, I _wanted_ those Weapons of Mage Destruction.

 * Gates "work" in a way that makes sense to medieval folk. One _walks_
through and _walks_ out the other side, of a _place_. To a medieval mind,
even a wizard, some huge distance up in the air is not, I think, a place,
unless there is something there (floating sky castle, magic carpet, etc.).
Without checking AW 'cause I lack time at the moment, I don't think a gate
could redirect an extremely fast object to some other vector - I think
it'd probably slow down to something fairly close to the destination's
frame, as it passed through. Or, if it can, then I'm afraid this may have
become a pretty wicked WMD...
