It's not actually a refinement, it's really the only way to read the spell.  "...can give it more strength." is a follow-on thought to 'loses one ST per day'.

But hey, it's your world, go nuts.  I know it always bothered me that _healing_ potions worked on zombies.  I'm sure I would have been called a mean GM, when I ruled against _that_.  Of course, I would also have suggested that certain preservation methods might slow the rate of decay.

Then I would figure out the cost of armor equal to (zombie's ST-8), and make that the mean cost of the preservation methods, balancing the 'preserved zombie' against an equivalent skeleton.  :)

I guess I am a mean GM.
