Subject: (TFT) I knew this guy
I knew this guy who did an amazing thing. There is this dungeon
that is a nightmare of traps and tricks. It is published in an issue of
Dragon Magazine. I mean whoever designed it is deranged. It is supposed to
be the Title Level Test for Theives. There are no monsters, just four levels
of automated death. At the very end of the dungeon is the only treasure in
the whole place. It is some big diamond or something. You may have actually
seen a tame version of this Dungeon in the D&D movie.
Anyway, back in the day, Ted Deiker decides to take on the dungeon.
Now this could have taken years to actually play out. First the GM rolls to
see if the player noticed the trap. If so, the GM gives a big description of
this particular traps' wicked perfection. Someone had been spending too much
time reading 'Grimtooths' traps.' and was stuck in a rut. No one else would
even bother with the dungeon.
So this is what he did: Remember in AD&D first edition how they have
live stock on the equipment tables. Cows, chickens and such? Well, he buys
every sheep he can find. He has more money than there are sheep. He gets
tons of sheep.
He herds the sheep into the dungeon and goes in after them. He finds
sheep pinned to the walls, piled up in pits, smashed to the floor, melted by
acid, burnt to a crisp, exploded, grated, and diced. More importantly he also
finds every trap already sprung. He just walks to the end, takes the diamond,
and leaves. He gets to be a Title Level Theif, and the DM is greatly
relieved.
It is a master stroke. Ted Deiker is still a legend in our gaming
community. For about five minutes of actual role playing, we laughed for a
week.
