The math part

Optically figures appear their size divided by the distance.
apparent Size = size / z
a hex that is 1.333 m to a side
to optically contain an area 40 m to a side...
40 / hex size = z
40 / 1.333 = z
40 / 1.333 = 30;
z = 30;
40 / 30 = 1.333
