Okay, I worked this out awhile back.
Useing the scale map to represent droped objects is pretty obvious but the other part of the idea was encumbrance and getting rid of the holes in the Character Sheets.
Encumbrance is a very effective tool for PC motivation as well as for putting them in check. (Smaug is dead but there's only 14 of you... what are y'all gonna do with the treasure?)
However making them erase EACH arrow, or calling for their Sheet over and over to check Encumberance was simplly not effective. And then what do you do if you find a mistake? Make 'em drop junk in the hall to get equal? That don't seem right...

Well this is susposed to be a GAME so I thunked up an idea. I have ALL items in the game listed on index cards instead of on a Character Sheet. I treat these sorta like a game of solitare. I list Width in the upper right corner, Hight in the upper left, Length in the lower left and Weight in the lower right. Then the center is for a discription of the item and any pertinate info. There are a few special types of cards as well. Clothing Cards(also armor) is placed in a stack next to the Character Sheet when worn. Container Cards (packs, pouches, bags, etc.) come with a Max Weight Carried figure listed under its actual weight. Container Cards cover the stack of items they carry. No item in the container may exceed any of it's dimensions (exceptions, ALWAYS exceptions) and the total weight of all items in the container cannot exceed its max weight. Finally there are Tally Cards for multipuls of the same type, gold, grain, leaves, etc.
So going into a stack is an option in combat. I should mention here that whatever a player wants to have in their left hand, the Card must be at the bottom left of their Sheet and the same for the right hand. It's much quicker to simply drop an item rather than to put it away in it's proper place. (quicker from a COMBAT point of veiw, no excuse for being a slob! lol) There is more like Pockets, Belts and Harnesses and other stuff but this should get the idea across. If anyone wants to see it give me a hollar and I'll put some pics on the website.
