Other than engagement, which to me is the central defining characteristic of melee.

I've played without hexes and minis in the past, and it worked, but has a very different (un-melee) feel.  More judgement less info immediately discernable on the table.  It's not bad, just different.

The whole inches without a grid thing worked great for me in V&V, but it is a supers game without the concept of engagement - a very different feel.

naturally YMMV, so I'd encourage you to try it out.
