Re: (TFT) Are large monsters like trolls, ogres, and giants good as PC's?
I'd say that multi-hex creatures tend to be a pain to move around on the hex board, especially miniatures. The cut out hex creatures are easier than miniatures, but can still be a pain.
Even so, I find that when players are allowed to control multi-hex creatures, such as when they create multi-hex illusions or summon beasts, the experienced players are frequently way too dangerous with them. As a GM, I frequently move the 4+ hex creatures such that they only trample one or two people per round, if any. I purposefully shift such that the creatures are engaged to allow the party to survive. But experienced players know exactly how to move such that they trample the maximum number of players while still remaining unengaged. So, even a dim-witted and clumsy troll can wipe out a much larger force if he uses his movement correctly and keeps initiative.
That said, our group has never allowed anyone to play more than a two hex creature..
Good Fortune,
Richard

Subject: (TFT) Are large monsters like trolls, ogres, and giants good as PC's?
I was wondering how well larger creatures fare when controlled by the players.
I play with miniatures, so I was hoping I'd be able to use some of the spare
models I have. So far, I've found that larger creatures aren't that great.
I've done just single hex trolls and ogres. Even though they have high ST,
with a low DX and no armor, they usually end up dead pretty quickly. Even a
troll's ability to regenerate 1 ST a turn doesn't help much, if at all.
So I ask you all. Do larger monsters have a place for PC's, or should they be
better left to enemies. If they are playable, what are the best strategies to
use with them? Also, are there rules for larger weapons? I feel that a 30 ST
troll should be able to do more than 2 dice damage.
