Re: (TFT) Hirst Arts Melee/Wizard Arena

Don't shut up Jay, you've got a point. But this has come up several times in the past.

Look, if I was playing "Call of Cthulhu" the last thing I personally would use would be miniatures. It would completely destroy the mood, which is what that game is all about. That and limit role playing. Cthulhu is not a miniatures game and I would never dream of running it with figures.

But, in my humble opinion, TFT is not really that great of a role playing game. At least not in the same way Cthulhu is. It's sort of stuck somewhere between a mediocre RPG and a very playable yet simple tactical wargame. Now, since pretty much everyone has to play TFT with some sort of cardboard pieces (I can't imagine TFT being played without any representation of figures, really, what would be the point?) it's not that big a leap to start using gaming figures instead of those same old, boring, cardboard pieces. Especially if you already have some laying around from other games. And after you've got the figures then why not have fun building or drawing some maps. Hey, didn't you have fun building model kits when you were a kid? So really, what's the difference between me placing a piece of sculpted 3D scenery down on a map and you drawing a black blob on a hex map with a dry erase marker and we both calling it a broken heap of machinery? In the end it's still just a representation of what the referee is describing, mine just looks cooler. One could even say it spurs ones imagination more than the black blob would ever be able to do.

Hey look, I play Heroscape. I've got tons of it and, oh my goodness, it's played on these cool looking hexes. You know what? TFT is played on hexes too! And look, I've got some old figures from the 80's laying around. Maybe I could play TFT on..... wait a minute, what am I thinking? Naw, I've got to stay a purist here. I'll just have to stick to my little cardboard pieces and "imagine" that that yellow colored piece of paper covered in big bold, black outlined hexes is a dungeon floor. Wouldn't want to inhibit my imagination any now would I?

Naw, not buying that argument at all....

DAMNIT Sarge!

Why COULDN'T you?

I understand the art part, the walls are BEAUTIFUL, but specific.

When you tell me about a room don't you have SOME kind of picture/ concept in your head?

I propose scaled tools to help you SHOW me what you mean as a GM, not just say it. (I've got them for the player too. Ever have a fencer explain just how they see their thrust?)

I could care less about the art part.
I LOVE it, but the pictures are immaterial.
Perter Jackson only caught a few better visuals than I already had in my head, and MY campaign was in New Zealand WAY before that flick.
And I've never been there.

Don't floks bitch cause HeroScape is spendy?

What's wrong with having more general tools for areas wthat ain't that important.
"We shall never pass this way again"

And why should I have to spend an arm and a leg to have them?

And why should the "props" DISCOURAGE inspiration.
"I couldn't do THAT"
Of course not.
He can't do what YOU can either.

(Mr. Miller, I don't mean you personally sir. Your work inspires me too!)

Far too often does a die roll occur with two difrent "mental" pictures between GM and player.

This makes for bad Rollplaying which makes Roleplaying diffacult at best.

What if gravity fuctioned according to gods fealings about the situation?

It JUST might, if you consider the individual in question a god.

I'm getting weird again.
Sorry.

My point is, don't give up that form of expression just because you see someone do it impressivly.

Is this cats stuff even to scale?
If so, can he tell me the "ballpark" weight of the largest stone in a wall?
How much Damage to get throught one?
Is that the same damage applied to Figures?

Pretty pictures is what's wrong with video games today.
There are subtler forms of immersion.
Those bitches just wanna sell vid cards and whatnot.

Go ahead and cut me off if'n I don't play the "buy a new computer every 2 or 3 years" game.

What are these NEW machines offering me?
LESS control over the shit I brought in the first place?

Progress ain't worth a durn if'n ya never grasped fully the previous "steep"

I'll shut up now....
