RuneQuest had a great mechanic:  Ransom.  This was the promise of something
of value (gold, cattle, stuff) to the foe if they only captured the person
seeking to be ransomed.  All sentient races would acknowledge and support
the Ransom concept; someone picking up or delivering the message about a
ransom or the ransom itself were under a protected condition that was
honored as the ransom was.  It was an inherent part of the culture, with
some battles being so serious that no ransom would be acceptable.

It could keep PCs from being slain but the PCs had to accept ransoms
sometimes, also.  That meant that the GM could have some villians survive to
misbehave again!  It also allowed some roleplay between the PCs and NPCs
they normally had little contact with.
