Plate mail (on a human) is intended to provide more protection to the man inside from weapons carried by other men. In other words, there's a ratio of protection to expected damage. In Melee, plate stops 6 hits and lets say that the average opponent carriesa 2D weapon, so the armor stops half of the expected damage.
I'd disagree. It stops almost all the average damage, which is 7.
Giants carry big honking clubs - 1D+1 per 10 ST of the Giant. That means that Giant plate on a 30 ST Giant should stop 13hits (the average of 3D+3). 40 Giant Plate should stop about18 hits while 50 ST Giant plate should stop an amazing 22 hits. How do I arrive at these figures? I'll use 3D+3 as an example.
How do you? The long way... The average roll of a D6 is 3.5 (1+2+3+4+5+6=21/6=3.5). So that 3D+3 is either 3.5 * 3 + 3, or (1D+1)*3 = 4.5 * 3 = 13.5
Similarly, the average roll for 4D+4 = 18. Same numbers, easier calculations.
