Hey Mark,
Well, I wouldn't consider a Giant wearing piece of metal 1/16"
thick to be wearing Giant plate.
Plate mail (on a human) is intended to provide more protection
to the man inside from weapons carried by other men. In other
words, there's a ratio of protection to expected damage. In Melee,
plate stops 6 hits and lets say that the average opponent carries
a 2D weapon, so the armor stops half of the expected damage.
Giants carry big honking clubs - 1D+1 per 10 ST of the Giant.
That means that Giant plate on a 30 ST Giant should stop 13
hits (the average of 3D+3). 40 Giant Plate should stop about
18 hits while 50 ST Giant plate should stop an amazing 22 hits.
How do I arrive at these figures? I'll use 3D+3 as an example.
The range on 3D is 3 to 18. 18 - 3 = 15. 15 / 2 = 7 (rounding
down). Now I add back the 3 (the minimum on a 3D roll) and
7+3 = 10. If we were talking about a 3D weapon, I could stop
there. But a 30 ST Giant club does 3D+3 ... so 10 + 3 is 13.
For a 4D+4 club .... 24-4=20 20/2=10 10+4=14 14+4=18.
Of course, he pays a huge penalty for that -- -6 DX so he's only
going to hit on a 5 or less (let's forget about averaging in double
and triple damage at the moment.) unless other DX adds come
into play.
That's what I think a Giant should get for his -6 DX and -6 MA.
