There's a game called CROSSFIRE that's a world war 2 miniatures game and it uses a system that's all about momentum. When one side has the initiative (momentum) they keep moving until they lose it. They can move as far as they want -- clear across the table if desired. The limiting factor is the side without initiative can shoot whenever they want. So if you move into the "open" you will get shot at. If you take enough damage...lose a unit or get suppressed iirc...you lose momentum and your opponent gains the initiative.
