I'm with Sgt Hulka. although I've never played Heroscape but I buy the stuff because it means MORE MINIS!
I think it's a great idea. The only drawback is that the scale will be a little off and I'll have to rebase them, just like I do with Heroclix.

I play both 3.5 & 4th ed. D&D as well and see value in the different approaches.
Remember, D&D is a gateway game, much  like a Daisy BB gun. 
It's popular and it gives you a taste of a whole hobby you might never have been exposed to before. 
You can extend that analogy as far as you like.
