Re: (TFT) slide rules

A gaming "Calculator"?
  . . .

I have a small collection of slide rules and various other calculating
devices, so this idea intrigues me.

I'd love to see this original post without all the odd replacement
symbols in it, any chance of getting that from you? (If you need to,
email me the Word document and I'll convert it.) If you've got some
ideas on constructing this, let me know, I would love to build something
like this. I've build a few such things out of stiff paper that I've
printed on, I'd love to work on a TFT calculator!

uhhhh...
Origional cut-n-pasted into notepad...
That ought ta work I'd think... but then again, when I get thinking...
Thoughts after if'n I skip the squerally characters...

Direct Checks
ST - DX - IQ
Stat = Base
Breaking a board with a punch is a ST Check
Performing a maneuver ('juke') while running a pass-route is a DX Check
Performing a complex calculation quickly is a Check vs. IQ
These Checks tend to describe highly specific Actions of very short duration.
Exerting as much force as quickly as possible.
Touching a specific location as quickly as possible.
Producing a specific datum as quickly as possible.

Combined Checks
ST, DX - ST, IQ - DX, IQ
Stat + Stat / 2 = Base
Breaking a board with a karate-chop is a Check vs. ST, DX
Fighting off an opposing maneuver ('bump and run' coverage) while running a pass-route is a Check vs. ST, DX Performing a complex calculation quickly with a calculator is a Check vs. DX, IQ These Checks tend to describe a group of specific Actions commonly associated with a larger scale Action.
Blocking an opponent over the course of a 'play'.
Playing a 'song' on an instrument.
Producing the correct answer first on an abacus.

Whole Checks
ST, DX, IQ
ST + DX + IQ / 3 = Base
Developing 'springboard chopping' is a whole Check
Attempting a maneuver that hasn't been practiced is a whole Check
Cramming for an exam is a whole Check
These Checks tend to describe long-term, or large scale Actions.
All of these tend to involve long-term effort to push the Figures 'bell-curve' past the standard distribution.

Compound Checks
Combinations of any of the above.

Joe Average @ 10,10,10 sets standard distribution.

(Actually my oldest 'pocket calculator' is Ropp's commercial calculator circa 1887. I assume I'll have to do a combo of the two approaches to get a functional deal w/o a bunch of "You write like Cory Doctrow junk")
