Over on BGG someone posted a question about doubling damage in Melee (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/7070806).
Someone else posted a variant they use rather than just doubling the total that seems like a pretty cool thing - Add +1 to each damage die for rolling a '5' to hit, +2 for a '4' and +3 for a '3'.
Just thought you might like to know about that.
