Just to throw the counter-example out: we had one PC who used a polearm to
great effect. And the GMs (self included) were never quite bright enough to
put enough ranged-weapon users in the NPC OpFors. We just kept feeding XP
onto his spear, or when a melee combatant would stop short of him, HE'D
charge and gather the points that way.
