Joel, you are correct. In TFT as written, Images and Illusions are creation spells that create a thing just like a created Shadow or Fire or Myrmidon is created, except that they can be disbelieved and don't affect inanimate objects, etc. The idea of having illusions require an audience to even exist is a new concept that people are talking about as an alternative way to play them that could be interesting and would make sense in a different way, and could be a way to balance them.

(Certainly, if Illusion were a Thrown spell which only affected the target, it would very much nerf the spell.)

I always thought that every one can see the illusionary fighter/myrmidon
that the mages just summoned. My interpretation of mass illusion was that
group of myrmidons appears. Oh well.
