Re: (TFT) The lost weekend

I don't think it's neanderthal at all. The original OGRE counters have classic period graphics, and those cool digital numbers. Then again, I'm a geezer at this point. My son is probably never going to believe that my friends and I wrote on bits of paper that we sent by hand and machine all over the world. But I have the evidence, I say it's more human, and Im' sticking to it.

Ogre truly is an awesome experience -- it provides that same sort of viscer
al, visual impact that the old SPI monster games did when they were set up
on the ping pong table back in the day! I'm enjoying my copy too (though
, I must admit my secret vice -- I ordered two copies of the "classic count
ers" just so I COULD relive the old glory days on the new maps at the new s
cale. I know, how very neanderthal of me!).

No, not th
e movie with Ray Milland, but my weekend with the Ogre
Designer's Edition
.

The counters took me 7 hours to punch and assemble! Then my OCD k
icked in
and I spent some time trying to find the best way of arranging t
he counters
in the box, culminating in my finding a set of dividers onlin
e, which meant
that I was off to Staples to get some card stock and a las
er-guided paper
cutter. (To be fair, my girlfriend is an artist who us
es a paper cutter a
lot and had previously mentioned her desire for a new
one, so it wasn't a
one-off thing, but frikkin' lasers on a paper cutter
! Science!!)

By Sunday I was able to start playing some solo scenar
ios to re-acquaint
myself with the rules. I've played 3 times now with
the Ogre winning each
time.

Back in 1977 when I first got Ogre, I p
layed it so many times with the
tiny chits and maps, I thought a few time
s it'd be nice to have a bigger
set, but this is mindblowing.

I gave
my son one of the pocket editions I bought a week or two back,
when he's
back down we can have a massive tankfest! Who knew 35 years later
the
se Metagaming titles would still be a big part of my gaming?
