TFT Psionics - Telepathy, Part 3



Project Anger: Project Fear: Project Lust:

These three different disciplines all work the same way. You simply trigger a very ancient part of the brain and the subject will feel the primitive emotion which that discipline is associated with. It is so simple to trigger these ancient parts of the brain, that there is no roll to activate. You just turn them on in the subject's brain.

The intensity is based on your power. Power 1 to 3 is a fairly small effect, from power 4 to 6 it is very noticeable, and power 7 or more is overwhelming which will completely dominate their thoughts. The effects last for a number of turns equal to your power.

The psion does not have to use their full power, low intensity triggering, (at level 1), is almost impossible to notice as being an externally generated impulse. At higher power (say power 3 or 4), the subject will likely suspect that something is affecting them, these urges are sudden and may feel imposed on their normal mental gestalt. At power 5+ they will know.

There is no defense against you triggering these effects, however, people are able to consciously fight these basic urges. The GM may require the victim to make a saving throw vs IQ to avoid acting on these impulses.

After you have triggered one of these basic emotions, you can not do the same one again for 1 minute.



Psychic Healing:

This allows you to help people who have had a deep emotional trauma. A person crippled by a horrible event in the past can be helped by you going into their mind and 'softening' the memories. They still remember what happened, but the terrible events seemed dulled as if they happened much longer ago. Their pain is not so immediate.

This is very difficult to do. It requires a skill roll at –3 to this skill. On a critical failure, the subject re-experiences the trauma. On a natural 18, the horror gets worse becoming more immediate and forgotten details rising to prominence. If you succeed they get a little bit better.

Normally, this will take several sessions to help someone. Take 36 and divide by your power. This is the approximate number of sessions needed to help someone. (So if you had spent 3 mIQ on Telepathy, you would need about 36 / 3 = 12 sessions.)

Taking this many sessions does not alert the subject that something uncanny is happening. You can divide this suggested number of sessions by 4 (round up), but then it is obvious that you are mucking about in their head.



Psychic Stealth:

This allows you to cause the subject to edit you out of the subject's senses so they do not see you or remember you even if you walk right past them. Only sight and hearing are affected, they will notice touch and smell. If you talk to them, attack them or make yourself a nuisance, the effect will be broken.

To succeed in this, make a 4vs This Skill if you will be from 0 to 4 meters away from the subject, a 3vs This Skill if you will be from 5 to 19 meters away, and a 2vs This Skill, if you will be over 20 meters from the subject. The subject won't notice you for X * X turns, where X is your power. (e.g. if your power was 7, then they would over look you for 49 turns.)

If you are going to use stealth to sneak by, doing this first (for any range) gives you a die bonus on the Stealth contest.


Receive Thoughts:

This allows you read the surface thoughts of the subject. You need only to contact the mind with your transfer mode, no link needs to be established.

Thus a hostile victim can try to prevent you from learning something by thinking about something else. However, if the victim is being questioned while you are receiving their thoughts, it is very hard to not think about what you are being questioned about. (In this case, make the contest to see if they are lying, but you have a 3 die bonus in the contest.)


Simple ideas are language independent, but complex thoughts are much more difficult to follow if you don't share a language.

The speed of the transfer is based on your power. At power 1 or 2, it is slow, about half speaking speed. (Thus, unless they are thinking slowly and carefully, you will miss a fair bit.) At power 3 or 4 it is at speaking speed. (You will pick up at least 90% of what they are thinking but you may miss quick, transient thoughts.) At power 5 to 7 it is double speaking speed, (you will get pretty much everything they think), and at higher power it is as fast as they can think.

It takes a 2vs This Skill to start picking up their thoughts if the subject is willing, or 3vs This Skill if the subject is resisting / trying to break contact. If the subject has the talent Trained Will and resists, your skill is at a –3 adjustment.

This does not work on animals. (There are rumors that some people do have a variation of this discipline which allows animal contact.)

You must maintain contact with the subject for as long as you are receiving thoughts.




Send Thoughts:

This allows you to send thoughts to another mind. You only need to contact the mind with your transfer mode, no link needs to be established.

Simple ideas are language independent, but complex, abstract thoughts are difficult to transfer unless you share a language.
