Well, at their heart, all they relly are are sets of battles as 
you say.  However, I've discovered that adding variability to
the room contents and randomly locating the exit brings back the
initial feel of the adventure.  There is no longer an "optimal 
path" and having to hunt for the exit adds some doubt as to the 
survivability of the characters.
