They had a later disagreement on who owned the copyrights to TFT, Ogre and
GEV. Since these were Metagaming's biggest sellers, it was a major rift.

What, exactly, was the nature of the rift between Howard Thompson and Steve
Jackson?

In issue #26 of "The Space Gamer", it would seem that SJ had already left
Metagaming to become an independent game designer and take over publication
of TSG.  Howard's comments in his final editorial hinted at no acrimony
towards Steve and seemed to wish him all the best with the magazine.  Steve
in turn seemed to indicate that he would maintain ties with Metagaming and
even allow Howard his own column in TSG for at least the following year.
Things seemed all warm and fuzzy.....what happened?
