Hm, what would that do exactly? Multiply their ST by 1.5 for
purposes of what weapons they can use? Very deadly, if so!
I don't know what it would do. Haven't bothered to figure it out, so I just
didn't allow it. I agree that it would be excessively deadly if the
character could carry weapons heftier than someone of the same strength.

Good question. I always thought of it as more like AD&D platemail -
basically a full suit of chainmail reinforced by plates in only the
most vulnerable areas. Your interpretation is also reasonable.
That would work for me also. Perhaps I should consider HalfPlate as a
classification of armor that is made up of various sorts of armor
heavier/better than Chain, but not as good as Plate.
By the way, I would consider a helm to be protection to the head regardless
of the armor that a character wears. If he has chainmail but wears a
leather conical helm, his head is protected for 2 points. For lead figure
use, even if you don't call your shots, it might be pretty obvious when
something is going for the head and not the body (dropping rocks, overhand
smacks, line of sight by thread, etc.).
